Learn about VA benefits for spouses
Spouses of US military veterans qualify for numerous benefits courtesy of the services rendered to the US military by their spouses. For spouses to receive veteran benefits, they need to fulfill a number of requirements. These requirements depend on the benefits that a spouse is seeking.
Examples of VA benefits for spouses include pension benefits, burial expenses and support for their children’s education.
These types of VA benefits that spouses are eligible to receive are explained below:
Death Pension.
The US Department of Veterans outlines the conditions under which a spouse becomes eligible to receive pension benefits. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, spouses become eligible to receive pension benefits if veterans have served the military for more than 90 days with one of the days being in combat. A veteran must have also left the military in honor for a spouse to qualify for pension benefits.
Education assistance for Dependants and Spouses.
Spouses of veterans are eligible to receive education assistance for up to 45 months if the injury suffered by the veteran resulted to total disability, hospitalization or loss of life. Its only when the death or injury of a veteran occurs during military service that spouses can claim education assistance benefits. Education assistance benefits can only be paid if a claim is lodged within 10 years after the injury is suffered and incases of death, claim for benefits should be lodged within 20 years after the veteran dies.
Burial Benefits
The US veteran department works with the National Cemetery Association to help spouses of veterans who die while in military service. Some of the benefits that spouses of deceased veterans are entitled to receive include, being buried in a national cemetery, a burial flag and grave marker. If a spouse chooses to be buried besides the veteran, the request is granted. If a veteran died while still in military service and was receiving VA pension at the time of their death, their spouses are eligible to receive burial expenses.
With all the above benefits, spouses of veterans can rest assured that their needs are well taken care of. Spouses of US military veterans who need to further their studies have the opportunity to do so courtesy of the education assistance benefits. The fact that the law recognizes spouses of US veterans as recipients of various benefits offered by the US Department of Veterans is a clear indication that the US government is committed to ensuring the spouses of military officers who either suffer permanent injuries or those who die in service run normal lives.
